Name

Fiona Barr

Biography

Fiona discovered an affinity for clay while studying as a mature student on the Foundation course at Bristol School of Art. She went on to complete an HNC in Fine Art (Ceramics) and continues to explore and develop her work at Maze Studios and in her home studio.

Fiona does not use a potters wheel to make her work. All pieces are hand-built using strong expressive gestural marks and imprinted textures on bold simple forms. Using several mixtures of grogged clay she forms vessels and sculptural pieces by pinching, coiling, slabbing and rolling. Mark making by scoring, carving, grating and burnishing. She finds these processes absorbing and often surprising – and ideally she allows the clay to suggest when it’s time to step away.
